ROUND 5 RESULTS

By Alec Kahn

Caulfield Grammarians scrambled home over a resurgent Emmanuel to consolidate their grip on top position in A Grade after round 5. Chasing 135, Grammarians were in trouble at 7-98 but an unbroken eighth wicket stand got them the points. Power House took second place from Reds, seamer Duncan Collie reducing Reds to 6-16 in a devastating opening spell.

In B grade, the race has opened up after Bayswater and Carnegie upset ladder leaders Power House and Coles Myer. An attacking declaration by Arcadia Hotel backfired when Reds cruised to victory with 9 wickets to spare. Glen Iris knocked Moorabbin Park off the top rung of the C grade ladder, and Burnley CYMS and South Yarra continue to loom as major challengers.

D grade saw several close finishes. Veteran opener Simon Phillips grafted 40 in 4 hours to steer Gunbower home by two wickets against Reds and give his side top position. Coles and Barnawartha North scored narrow victories to remain in contention. Powerhouse collected outright points despite a lone hand by Burnley's Andy Helstrup, who made 70 of his side's 87.
