B-Grade Match Report Round 5 Vs Bentleigh

By Rusty 'Red Bull' Russell

After a disappointing match last week against Easterflow the boys were keen to get back on the winners board against long time foe Bentleigh. A win would keep us in contention for the top four heading into Christmas; however a loss would have us slip us further back into the chasing pack.

Thanks to a mix up from Captain Pearce everyone arrived at the match almost an hour and a half early. Everyone except for Sid that is who managed to get himself lost in Parkville and had to be picked up well into our bowling innings, $2 fine.

After Captain Peacock managed to loose yet another toss, we were sent into bowl. Rusty and Damo found their rhythm almost immediately and were able to build the pressure from the beginning, with the break through finally coming with 26 runs on the board. Rusty getting a wicket with what can only be described as a truly terrible delivery.

Wickets continued to fall fairly regularly from that point onwards, despite 3 regulation catches being put down from genuine edges. Cole was able to secure 3 wickets for 9 runs in a tidy spell bowling at first change, with DK Giles also snagging 3 wickets during the innings.

Sheelan & Rusty also both bowled very well, Sheelan was particularly unlucky to have only one wicket in his first match of B grade. The end total was a very modest and gettable 135 runs to win.

However, in typical Gryphon fashion we were in trouble early, loosing both Gaurav and Sid cheaply, after in-form batsmen McLeod went for 7, the game was evenly balanced at 3-23. Matt Sweeny & Captain Pearce was able to dig down and help us get to 70 runs before Pearce was LBW for 20 runs. Cole after being promoted due to having to leave early didn’t trouble the scorers as he added to the fine jar.

Matt Sweeny however, was able to remain constant for the entire innings, despite having to call for a runner for the last 10 overs of the match due to some lack luster fitness. In the end he made a crucial 62 runs not out, as we were able to achieve victory with 3 wickets in hand.
