B Grade Match Report vs. Bentleigh Part 1
By Chris 'Red Bull' Russell
After a couple of matches in A Grade and with all the washouts it has been a while since my last B Grade match report. Hopefully, unless my constant strong performances are rewarded with relegation to the 1st XI, these reports will be more regular for the rest of the season.
After a comfortable win against Bentleigh earlier in the season the boys were confident of another win, as this was a must win game if we wanted to play finals.
After captain Peacock lost yet another toss, we were strangely sent into bat. The game started badly when Sweeny decided to be a nice guy and walked in the first over after edging one to the slips cordon. This sort of f fair and honest behavior should be frowned upon and he felt the scorn of an angry Peacock afterwards.
Shaun was able to keep the score ticking along nicely, making a hard hit 49 runs putting every bad ball to fence with efficiency. Captain Peacock contributed a very ugly 9 runs, which included being dropped twice, almost running himself and his partner Shenuka out, thankfully he was eventually put out of his misery when he was run out by a nice piece of fielding.
Abhi was the main stay in the lower order, making his second milestone for the club, making a patient 60 runs, these important runs helped push the total along to solid 150 total. Unfortunately, once again yours truly was left not out 47 runs short of my debut 50. I cant help but feel that my first big score is just around the corner, as I am now the only Gryphon in the club has not been dismissed this season, 5 not outs and counting.
With 28 over’s to ball, we were hoping to get a couple of early wickets to get the momentum heading into next week. It wasn’t long before Joe Parel had the breakthrough after clean bowling the opening bowler.
The team could learn a lot from Joe & Abhi about how to truly celebrate taking a wicket, making runs, taking a catch, or any minor thing of note they do during a game. Both players celebrate like they have just scored the winning runs in a World Cup Final.
After a few close shouts & near misses I finally got the wicket I deserved after Cole took a nice diving catch at Gully.
At the 15 over mark Cole was bought into the attack, with immediate results, unfortunately both Sid & Peacock dropped catches from him in his first 7 balls. Peacock’s catch was in particular an absolute sitter of a catch. There was some speculation amongst the boys, started from Peacock himself that he deliberately dropped the catch to fire Cole up.
Good captaincy or just plain terrible fielding, it seemed to do the trick after Cole preceded to rip apart the middle order of Bentleigh with 7 Overs, 3 wickets for 1 run..
We finished the day at 5-45 from 28 Overs, still 107 runs ahead, if we can bowl well and bat well we are a genuine chance to get an outright result, which will help us push into the top 4 heading into finals.
