Season 2013/14 Week 2

By Morgan Cole

The Gryphons have again had a week of mixed fortunes, with some wins, some defeats and a draw.

The 1st XI have missed an excellent opportunity to defeat last season's A grade premiers, falling short by 26 runs in a significantly better effort than in Round 1.

After being sent into the field, the boys started well, claiming the first wicket with just 26 runs on the board, Cole clean bowling the South Yarra opener. South Yarra then settled and proceeded to tick the score along to 60 before debutant Andrew Gamble and leg spinner Shik ripped through the middle order to have South Yarra reeling at 7-80.

However, a combination of some lucky hitting and some ordinary fielding allowed South Yarra to regain the momentum, with their dangerous all-rounder Reed riding his luck early before hitting some big shots to make a fast paced 59. The end result was 197 runs on the board for South Yarra.

The batting got of to the worst possible start when a very annoyed Murray was given LBW after hitting one onto his pads. However, Shik (26), Sunny (32) & Jones (32) consolidated nicely to keep the score moving along, with the Gryphons in a reasonable position at the drinks for an assault at the total.

However, the South Yarra captained bowled some very tight and defensive off spin to suffocate the runs and as a result a steady fall of wickets fell as guys tried to lift the tempo. Keeper Jimmy Kumar gave us a chance, blasting 20 runs in an over. However, the pursuit of 9 runs an over for the last 8 overs became too much in the end.

Overall, it was a disappointing result but with plenty of positives to be taken from it. This week we have the other Grand Finalists in Parkville District at Brens Oval in the first of many 2 day games. Hopefully we can work on our fielding and come out and take our first big scalp.

The 2nd XI were denied a good win by the wet weather, with new recruit Ashwani Mehta again the star with the bat smashing 47. Rusty was the pick of the bowlers with 2 for 19.

The 3rd XI has consolidated top spot after a crushing defeat of arch nemesis Carnegie. Debutant Matt Roberts making a fine 67* and Tom Weir adding a useful 26 runs. Old Man Harro was the star with the ball with 4 wickets.

The 4th XI & the new 5th XI played a rain affected match in D Sunday grade, with Will Stanistreet (76) & Jim Dell'oro (5/10) starring for Mannix lads.

The 6th XI had a big win against Toorak Prahran, with Chetan Narayan having an amazing match with 76* batting at 10, then taking 6-33 & 4-44, to finish the game with 10 wickets. Captain Chitre also made a fine 82 to anchor the innings.

The 7th XI had a great win to complete the round, a last ball win after successfully chasing a big score of 216. Captain Jerry lead from the front with a 56*, although a great even effort with the bat saw 6 guys make over 15.
