D-Grade Round 10- Battle of the Titans
By Stephen Pearson
The match was 9 rounds in the making, as the two undefeated* D-Grade teams met for the first time in season 2013/14. The Burnley Skipper, Donovan, won the toss and had no hesitation in the batting on the hard Fawkner Park number 2 wicket.
Big John Eaton survived a huge LBW shout first ball, but his opening partner was not so lucky, as the Big Bad Moose got the first wicket. Harro claimed his 300th wicket for the club at the other end, also LBW, and then clean bowled the number 4 batsmen to reduce Burnley to 3/12. Eaton then combined with Donovan to steady the ship, with the later providing a number of hard chances, including one of Andy Leong’s bowling just before drinks.
After drinks Donovan spooned one up of Cam Davey’s off spin bowling, which was safely gloved by Mellar. Eaton continued to find partners on his way to unbeaten 132, while Burnley made 203 off their 45 overs. Harro the only bowler to take 2 wickets for just 26 runs off his 8 overs.
After Tea it was then the Matt & Jo show as they raced to the 50 without loss. Sweeney (27) then skied one of the Deakin, bringing Nalluri to crease. Parel (56) and Nalluri (35) combined for an 80 run partnership that saw Monash Uni through to drinks. The Gryphons then lost 3/3 as the Burnley skipper used all his cunning and guile to try to stop the fast paced run chase. Veteran Lamba (37) held his nerve, as wickets continued to fall at the other end getting the Gryphons within 20 runs, until he became Donovan’s 5th wicket.
Enter the Big Bad Moose who made a quick fire 10, until his was bowled with 10 runs to win. Longwani and Gryphons’ Captain Pearson had the better part of 8 overs to score those 10 runs, and with just 3 runs left to win Pearson ‘Hulked’ out and smashed a full toss for 4, maybe even 6, to secure the win with just 2 wickets in hand.
* Undefeated as silly points lost for ineligible players do not count.
