Winter Cricket 2014 Round 2

Round 2: Monash Gryphons (Blue) vs Monash Gryphons (Grey)

We arrived at Elsternwick park ready to play the Gryphon derby, only to find two teams setting up to play on our ground. Their umpire and captains were adamant that the ground was theirs. With the other grounds flooded, this meant that two teams were going to be disappointed. Heated words were exchanged, and it took a call to the MYCA committee to wrestle control of our ground back.

After that delay, Bruce lost his first toss as captain. Sandip chose to bat, and we got straight into the cricket. Rusty and Phani opened the bowling against very solid batsman. Rusty took awhile to get his line right in the wet conditions, with the ball swinging off the narrow pitch. But after a couple of overs he was in full flight and bowling a great tight line. Very unlucky not to get a wicket. On the other end Phani was bowling a treat. He bowled 4 overs for 5 runs. He also managed to get the wicket of one of the openers when he threw his bat and the ball along with it to Moose, who took a comfortable catch.

Andy was then introduced, in what turned out to be a brilliant change by Bruce. In the first over Andy had 4 chances, one of which was taken- Sandip skied a shot to Moose at square leg. He then bowled their number 4. Moose was bowling from the other end, and managed to get 2 wickets, including a c&b when a bouncer hit Kishore on the glove and looped up for a simple catch. The Blues were in a great position. At 6 down, Bruce and Nathan started a spell of pace and control. The lower order batsman couldn’t cope. Nathan took 2, both to great catches. Joe and James took catches that seemed to stay in the air forever. Bruce clean bowled the number 9, his pace was too much to handle. We were great in the field today. Bruce and James created 2 run outs and we created many other opportunities. The Greys were dismissed for 88.

Going in to bat, we were confident that we could get the runs. Jo and James got us off to a great start, with a partnership of 33. The opening bowlers bowled with pace, but seemed to be thrown by the 2 left handers at the crease. The Greys gave away 21 extras in total- mostly due to leg side bowling. During this time, our openers kept the run rate at a brisk 3 runs an over. After Jo was dismissed Akshay and James finished the game. James took the match away from the Greys, showing great composure to finish the innings on 53 (n.o.). He has been a great find for the Gryphs! Akshay played another great knock, finding the gaps to end up with 19 (n.o.). We controlled the game well and we now have our first win for the season.

Monash Blue 1/98 (25) def Monash Grey 88 a.o.

James 53 (n.o.) Akshay 19(n.o) Nathan 2/14 Moose 2/16
