Mercantile Round 1 Results
By Alec Khan
Despite last week's downpour, the season got away to a successful start with 15 of the 20 matches in Round 1 being completed. It appears that apart from VCA firsts and seconds, we were the only turf competition in Melbourne to play.
Reigning premiers Powerhouse were in ominous early form, thumping 8-266 against Sacred Heart with recruits Scott (115) and Bishop (54) leading the onslaught. Newcomers Caulfield Grammarians also began impressively, knocking over grand finalists Carnegie in a close contest.
In B Grade, Glen Iris and Bayswater had big wins, as did Monash Gryphons and Moorabbin Park in C grade, the Gryphons getting the closest to an outright result in the round. Results were much tighter in D grade, with Sacred Heart and Gunbower playing a tie and Reds snatching a late victory over Burnley.
